How to Import Products in Magento Tutorial

Friday, September 21st, 2012

Here at Web Design GM we have developed many e-commerce websites for clients who have vast quantities of products they want to import on their new Magento website. The trouble with the native Magento import and export feature is that if you are importing over a 500 products then you may have issues with the following:

  • Edit the .htaccess file and increase the PHP memory.
  • Products may take a long time to upload.
  • Reindexing can take forever if you have loads of products in Magento.
  • If the format of the of a particular product in the .CSV is incorrect then none of the products will be imported until the format of all of the products in 100% correct.
  • You need to map the columns exactly how Magento likes to imports products there is no flexibility and it is very rigid and frustrating that they have not addressed this issue.
  • You can not import images so if you have 1000′s of products then you would have to manually upload images to all of the products.
  • You can not create categories on the fly or attributes so you will have to either create them programatically or manually create them which can take forever if you have many categories or attributes to create.

Fortunately for everyone we have a something which can help with all of the above and some. Sebastien Bracquemont aka Dweeves has developed a software which has really changed the way we import or export products. is a software which is extracted to the root of your Magento folder and it accesses your database and imports products at “lighting speeds”. Some of Magmi’s feature are the following:

  • Direct SQL Magento product import.
  • Advance features, flexible CSV formats, value replacer and much more.
  • Configurable products are allowed to be imported.
  • Tier pricing can be imported.
  • Create categories on the fly.
  • There is more features listed on their website.

What is Responsive Design?

Responsive design is where a website will re-size itself to the size of the device that is being used to view the website on. The layout of the website will often change in order to fit within the display.

A good illustration of responsive design can be found at:

What are the benefits of responsive design?

The benefit of responsive design is solely for the user. A responsive website will know what size display the user is using and re-size itself accordingly. This will make the website easier to read, navigate and interact with.

It is very common to have to pinch the screen of a mobile device in order to be able to read content, navigate and view images, having a responsive website will eliminate this and give the user a much better experience while on your website.

With this is mind it is hard to state a case for not having a responsive website, especially as web browsing using mobile devices has become so popular with the emergence of smart phones and tablets over the last few years.

Good Examples of Responsive Websites

Please have a look at the below websites. To test their responsiveness resize the browser window and watch the layout accommodate the browser.

We all want our visitors to have a great experience when using our sites, and using a responsive layout is the best way to ensure this.

Bit Torrent Study Discovers Most File Sharers Are Now Monitored

Wednesday, September 5th, 2012

Ever heard of torrents or used Bit Torrent to download movies, music or shared files over the internet? Researchers have discovered that anyone who does use Bit Torrent to download files over the World Wide Web will most probably be monitored.

Studies were carried out by Birmingham University and they have discovered that if someone downloads a movie or a file using Bit Torrent then this would be logged by a monitoring firm within hours of the download. Birmingham University researchers were shocked at the level of monitoring undertaken.

The findings also revealed that the monitoring did not differentiate between someone who is a hardcore downloader or someone who downloads little and are new to file sharing. Also the more popular the content or file is the more frequent file is going to be monitored.

Copyright owners are using monitoring firms to collect IP address to apply for court orders and talking to Internet Service Providers to hand over residential addresses to them.

This certainly is geared to crack down on illegal file sharing and companies who are losing millions to people who file share over the internet. With also the news of the co-owner of Pirate Bay arrested in Cambodia it is almost certain that file sharing over the internet is at a all time low.

Banks to Seize Control of Yellow Pages

Tuesday, September 4th, 2012

There have been several articles over the last few days about Yellow Pages, Yell.Com and their new company name Hibu. There is one in particular that caught my eye in the Sunday Times on 2nd September and on the same day in the Sunday Telegraph. I attach the link at the bottom of this story.

The reason why I am mentioning this is that I am hopefully in a very good place to offer you a very balanced view on the best way forward for you and your company.

I am an Ex – National Account Manager at Yell and therefore have vast experience of the Yellow Pages Book and Yell.Com itself. For the last 5 years though I have worked within a company that specialise in getting companies considerably better results from the internet and in particular Google. We are rated as the top company in the country at doing what we do and have thousands of clients that would vouch for our results and the great Return On Investment that they are receiving.

If you would like to speak to someone who will give you a fair and honest appraisal of the best way to market your company on the internet then I would love the opportunity of talking to you.

If you are just unsure as to whether you should continue with your current programme of advertising with printed directories or other similar media then I feel that my advice can be invaluable and will help you to make the right decision for you. Watch my little animation on the home page which will show you the complete service that we offer, it’s only meant as a bit of fun but hopefully you will realise that the underlying message is very serious.

Thanks for your time and attention, and here’s that link I was talking about is
